  1. I guess Hanks couldn’t do Shawshank b/c he was doing Forrest Gump, which is understandable. Travolta as Forrest Gump just seems silly. I don’t know what Keanu Reeves was thinking turning down anything back in 1986 before his career had been established. Mel Gibson seemed a bit old to play Maximus; Crowe was a good bit younger. Mel would have been an awesome Maximus in his prime, but by 2000 was just exiting his prime.

    1. Well said, Gary! I too find it strange to think of those actors taking up those roles. The ones who ended up with them have been so famous because of them. Thank you for sharing your views. Keep them coming! :)

      1. I guess Matthew Broderick owes Johnny Depp his career. lol. Frankly, I don’t blame Depp for turning down that role b/c I’m sure it didn’t seem interesting while reading the script, or synopsis. I didn’t even like the film in the first place and never understood the hype for such a dull movie.

      2. It’s a decent movie, nothing more. And given how selective Depp has been in his career, it was good that he skipped it.
